Ho Chi Minh City rose up from the small fishing village, Saigon. Under French rule the city prospered, in 1887 it became the capital of Union of Indochina and in 1954 it became the capital of South Vietnam.
Saigon was hit hard by the 1968 Tet Offensive, with hundreds of thousands of refugees seeking housing and food, it was impossible for the city to keep up. In 1975, the city fell back under Communist rule. Saigon would soon be renamed Ho Chi Minh after the former North Vietnamese president (1890-1969). Today, the city is the seat of the Saigon Opera House, War Remnant Museum, and Ho Chi Minh University.
Over the course of many years, the city has become one of the hottest tourist destinations in the world, thanks to its historical value and amazing attractions. Commerce and culture drive the city and give it a modern feel, while some areas are more urban and historical.
